We often go to the supermarket to buy a specific list of foods and everything we need for the home, but how many of you then come out of the checkout with a lot more and unexpected stuff? If you are among the many who fall into this category, put away your feelings of guilt because it is not a coincidence. Consumer psychologist Dr Cathrine Jansson-Boyd from Anglia Ruskin University reveals all the tricks supermarket retailers use.
They often place baskets and trolleys at certain points in the attempt to make you spend more. When you enter a supermarket, you are greeted by a series of promotions and signs that push you to buy products that you did not expect at all. There are numerous other subtle tactics that stores employ to convince you to spend, from the artificial flavors wafting from the bakery aisle to the strategic placement of products on the shelves.
“Customers often found that they couldn’t hold their shopping in their hands because they were gradually buying different products,” he said. Mirror Dr. Cathrine Jansson-Boyd – hopping from one aisle to another and that’s why supermarkets are full of baskets with wheels to carry even the extra stuff you buy. They can hold almost the same amount as a small shopping cart, but because it is a basket, you feel like you are buying less.. Often the smaller shopping carts are on the opposite side of the store entrance and the larger ones are right at the entrance. If you want the smaller one you have to go all the way around to get it, so it’s usually easier to grab the larger one as you walk by because it’s closer to the door.”
So, after discovering these tricks, are you still thinking of getting a wheelie bin?
