The parish priest of Pontelongo silences the unionist who remembers in church the Metro worker who committed suicide after being fired

“Here we are not in the uniontalk only about him if you want to remember him”. The parish priest of Long Bridgein the province of Padua, addressed the following words to delegate of the Cgil who was reading a letter in memory of his colleague who a few days ago he took his own lifeafter being fired from Metro Group. A drastic decision, adopted by the company, for having caused a damage not exceeding 300 euros in calculating transport costs for some customers. The measure, due to an error after almost thirty years of career without any objection, it seemed excessive to the co-workers, who would have liked to express their dissent during the funeral. But don Carlo Pampalon he shut up Piera Meneghetti who had begun to read a message from the pulpit agreed intervention with colleagues.

“Your memory is linked to the most beautiful and carefree moments of our Metro family – said Meneghetti – because truly we were a family. The company becomes liable towards an employee responsible for that life and must take care of people as human beings who need protection, to feel important and an integral part of a system, rather than resources to be exploit and sacrifice in the name of the God of money”. Having reached this point, the delegate was interrupted by the parish priest: “Talk about him, if you want to remember him.”

Already done the name of the companyin whose Mestre store the man worked, has put the priest on the defensive. This is how Piera Meneghetti, after the warning, avoided reading other sentences contained in the message. For example: “You have suffered many wrongs in the company that you loved and for which you always worked with commitment and great professionalismalways facing everything with your head held high. Then probably something it broke and you no longer had the strength to react”. After the ceremony some colleagues expressed their solidarity with the trade unionistalso because in such a tragic event the cause of death cannot be separated from the memory of the person who fell depression after dismissal.

The parish priest’s homily, as reported by Courier of Venetohad been centered on the human qualities of the worker, without going into details of the reason that led him to commit suicide, in his home in Long sack (in the province of Padua). “He was a good person, perhaps even too much so, the priest said, only alluding to the family’s request for truth. He dedicated his life to workbut he went through a moment of weakness. The mystery of death is great, just as great is the mystery of this death, which the family now asks to be made clearer. If this man has given so much to our community and to those dear to him, perhaps help was lacking elsewhere”.

After being fired, the Metro employee had already found a new job and had turned to the union to ask that the measure be challenged.
