Migrants, Libyan Coast Guard Abandons Corpses at Sea. Images from Sea-Watch Plane: “For Them, They Are Only Worth It When They’re Alive”

The plane Seabird of the humanitarian organization Sea Watchoperating in the central Mediterranean, witnessed the abandonment at sea of two corpses by the Libyan coast guard. The NGO itself reports this in a press release on X where it publishes the aerial images taken by Seabird. “Today our Seabird plane spotted a dinghy with 80 people on board in dramatic conditions. Nearby two boats of the so-called Libyan coast guard intervened to recover the people. Behind them they left two bodies”.

The Sea-Watch crew would have tried to communicate with the Libyans: “Every attempt by our crew to reach the boats by radio (in English and Arabic) to ask for the recovery of the bodies was ignored”, continues the statement. Which denounces: “For the militias the bodies of the migrants they are only valid when alivewhen they can be used to extort money from families or sold as slaves. The dead, on the other hand, do not even deserve a decent burial”.
